Superyacht UK’s 2019 Young Designer Competition – Dates and location announced

by | Apr 15, 2019

The new location for the annual Superyacht UK Young Designer Competition has been announced. The event will take place at the Superyacht Design Forum in London’s Design Centre at Chelsea Harbour.

This year’s competition is the fifth edition, and will take place between 25th and 26th June 2019.

The Superyacht Design Forum, where the competition takes place, is a two day event aimed at anyone within the superyacht design word. The busy schedule is filled with workshops, talks, round tables and more, and intends to inspire, inform, and encourage innovation and next-generation thinking.

Giving these young students such a prestigious platform for this competition is a wonderful opportunity for us to further contribute to the future prosperity of our industry.

The Young Designer Competition offers an opportunity for young British designers to gain valuable work experience and recognition from the industry. Eight third year design students are selected to take part from universities across the UK.

The students will be given a chance to showcase their design ideas to industry experts. After being handed a full brief on the morning of the 25th June, the entrants will then be asked to produce a GA and profile sketch.

Entrants are encouraged to use the conference and showrooms at the event, along with the array of international superyacht designers and professionals present, as their inspiration.

Each student then has 20 minutes to present their designs on two A1 sheets to the judging panel. The panel judging the competition includes a number of superyacht industry professionals.

The winner will then be announced at the forum’s closing ceremony named “Champagne Conversation” on the 26th June.

The winning designer will be handed the opportunity of a four-week internship at Pendennis Shipyard – a custom superyacht builder and refit specialist. The runner-up will receive a two-week internship at Olesinski, an Isle of Wight-based design and naval architecture studio.

The Chairman of Superyacht UK, Jeff Houlgrave, said: “Boasting a growing annual revenue of £697m and employing over 4,572 people, the UK’s superyacht sector remains a global hotspot for pioneering design and innovation.

“Superyacht UK is keen to help nurture Britain’s next generation of design talent to ensure this industry continues to thrive. We are delighted to have the support of The Superyacht Group at this year’s Superyacht UK Young Designer Competition.

“The Superyacht Design Forum and its co-host, the Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour, will provide a truly visionary location to inspire, immerse and develop our young designers.”

William Mathieson, Editorial and Intelligence Director at The Superyacht Group, and Superyacht UK Committee member, also said: “Having sat on the Superyacht UK Committee for a number of years and seeing what a wonderful legacy programme the Superyacht UK Young Designer Competition is, it was the obvious fit to invite the competition to be staged at The Superyacht Design Forum.

“The content of our forum is always focused on improving the future of our industry and promoting best practice. Thus, giving these young students such a prestigious platform for this competition is a wonderful opportunity for us to further contribute to the future prosperity of our industry, as well as their futures. With many of the world’s top designers in attendance, this is a fantastic hunting ground for superyacht businesses to spot emerging talent.”
