Year two of ‘Show Environmental Pledge’ launched by British Marine

by | Aug 1, 2019

British Marine is continuing and improving its long-term goal of having a positive impact on the environment as it launches the second year of its Environmental Pledge. Year two of the campaign will be launched at the Southampton International Boat Show in September this year.

British Marine will, this year, focus on eight specific areas where it can have a positive impact. These areas are Plastics, Paper, Catering, Waste and Recycling, Our Home, Travel, Access, and Education and Awareness.

At the Show itself there will be new water refill points, to combat single use plastics, and there will also be no plastic bottles used at any of the onsite catering outlets. They’ll also be launching a new Sea Clean Up Regime and offering free reusable water bottles to all exhibitors.

In addition to the reduction in the amount of single use plastics being used onsite, the Show will also ensure that food outlets only serve sustainably sourced fish. And there will also be a number of educational environmental activities to encourage visitors, staff and other stakeholders to recycle waste wherever possible.

A new Exhibitor & Contractor Charter will be launched at the event, which aims to ensure that all operations both directly and indirectly in accordance with the event are as eco-friendly as possible.

British Marine have added that on top of adapting the running of the Show, they also intend to have exhibitors and contractors sign a commitment to marine conservation through the voluntary Charter over the coming years.

The 2019 Show will also see the launch of the Exhibitor Environmental Award, which will be judged by an expert panel. The award will recognise exhibitors who have embraced environmentally responsible behaviour and sustainable work practices at the Show. The panel judging the award will include representatives of the RYA and British Marine’s joint environmental initiative The Green Blue. The first winner will be announced at this year’s British Marine Ball, taking place the evening of Saturday 14 September at the Show.
